Apologizing does not always mean that you’re wrong and the other person is right. It just means that you value your relationship more than your ego.

Using fancybox with iframe as modal dialog on a web page with success event and modal result

I’ve needed to create a modal popup dialog for a CMS I’m working on and I’ve found out, it is a pretty hard to de-couple popup window / iframe from the caller parent page.

What I needed to do is pretty straightforward and well supported in all conventional UI libraries and languages.

  1. Open popup window and display content
  2. Allow user to select an item
  3. Pass selection information back to the parent window, while keeping track of the instance of the popup window / box.

The problem was, all the solutions I’ve found, lacked the disambiguation requirement. What I wanted was something like this on parent:

$('a#select').fancybox({
    // ... usual fancybox init stuff,...
    onSuccess: function(obj, data)
    {
        console.log(data);
    }
});

And this on child:

$(this).find('a[x-special="select-asset"]').click(function() { parent.jQuery.fancybox.success({ url: 'url-to-asset.png', }); });

Diff of the modified fancybox 2.0.6 uncompressed can be found here: http://www.enscope.com/blog/82517/jquery.fancybox-2.0.6.diff.

I’ve also submitted this diff to fancybox developers and I hope it will be included in some subsequent release.

As one of the devs of fancybox wrote me, there is no need to modify the source code and it can be done straight from the iframe code:

$(this).find('a[x-special="select-asset"]').click(function() {
    parent.jQuery.fancybox.trigger('onSuccess', null, {
        url: 'url-to-asset.png',
    });
});

So there is no need to modify the source code of the fancybox. My mistake.

Vodafone DE is the WORST ISP

I have to say… I’ve used a lots of ISPs over Europe in my life in multiple countries, but I NEVER experienced the style of “doing business” as Vodafone_DE is doing. It’s the worst of the worst and I have to say, I would never expect it from a company in Germany. So much arrogance and ignorance as Vodafone Germany is showing to their customers is unspeakable.

Few minutes ago, my girlfriend was screamed at by a customer service woman, who we wanted to explain that we want to cancel our contract, which was unwillingly extended for next two years, because we moved from Senftenberg to Dresden. We EXPLICITLY asked a staff member in Senftenberg Vodafone branch, whether we can cancel the contract when the service in our Dresden area will not be sufficient and also asked, if we will be able to get IPTV here.

After coming to Dresden, we found out, that our house is one of the few having poor connection to the nets and we are able to reach at most 3000kbps and not even close to contracted 6k and they of course can not provide us with IPTV (which requires roughly 6 - 8kbps at least)…

They wrote us a letter with the soonest possible cancelation term in Jan/2014… which is terrible, unfair and utterly arrogant.

Apart from that, two days ago, our DSL like just went dead. I’m working a lot from home, we use the nets to receive TV (downgraded on my own to lower quality but lower bandwidth so we can watch it), so we really need fast and reliable connection. We were told, some technician will contact us in 24 hours. We waited 48, today we called on a support line. The woman there (different from the one we called then and I wrote about above) also ironically told us, we are not the only one who has some line problems and they will contact us - not telling us when exactly, thus I suppose we are going to wait till next week?

I have never experienced this, I’m shocked, I’m angry and I will spread the message NEVER TO USE ANY VODAFONE GERMANY (AND TO BE SURE ANY VODAFONE AT ALL) SERVICES AGAIN, BECAUSE IT IS A COMPANY, THAT YOU WOULD NOT EXPECT IN A THIRD WORLD COUNTRY, NOT TO SAY GERMANY.

BIG SHAME TO YOU VODAFONE!

If you use Panic’s Coda web-development app, thanks and guess what! We have 2 exciting new things for you. Coda 2, a seriously beefed-up (and trimmed-down) update. And Diet Coda, the potent portable iPad version for quick fixes on the go. It’s serious business.

Downgrade Airport Express Firmware →

I’ve accidentally upgraded my Airport Express 7.6 to firmware 7.6.1 (I’ve heard before, it’s kinda flawed) and then I’ve experienced stream dropouts between songs in iTunes, which I hated.

If you have a similar problem or just need to downgrade your AXP firmware for any other reason and you already have Airport Utility 6.0 installed (i.e. using OSX Lion), download and install Airport Utility 5.6 (I will live along 6.0 nicely). Then, click on a base station you want to downgrade and click on Base Station menubar item, then Upload Firmware. Select your desired firmware version and… voila!

This is a bucket of shit. If someone throws shit at us, we throw shit back at them. We start a shit fight. We throw so much shit at them, that they can’t pick up shit, they can’t throw shit, they can’t do shit.
